GMS205L Liquid/Liquid Membrane Separator
The Headline Filters GMS205L is a high-pressure membrane separator specifically designed to remove water and other high-surface-tension liquids from liquid hydrocarbon sample streams.
Unlike conventional gas/liquid membrane separators, the GMS205L uses a specialised M3 PTFE liquid/liquid separation membrane. The membrane selectively prevents entrained water droplets from passing through while allowing the hydrocarbon liquid sample to flow through to the analyser.
This makes the GMS205L particularly suitable for protecting liquid analysers where small quantities of immiscible water may be present in gasoline, kerosene, diesel and other hydrocarbon sample streams.
How It Works
The incoming liquid sample contacts the M3 membrane.
Hydrocarbon liquid passes through the microscopic membrane structure to the clean sample outlet, while water and other high-surface-tension liquids are rejected by the membrane and remain on the upstream side.
This provides continuous liquid/liquid separation without changing the properties of the hydrocarbon sample being delivered to the analyser.

Liquid Flow Performance
Flow through the M3 membrane depends on the hydrocarbon being sampled and the differential pressure across the membrane.
| Sample Liquid | Flow at 1.5 psid | Flow at 15 psid |
|---|---|---|
| Gasoline | 65 cc/min | 650 cc/min |
| Kerosene | 29 cc/min | 290 cc/min |
| Diesel | 22 cc/min | 220 cc/min |
For best separation performance, the differential pressure across the M3 membrane should not exceed 15 psid, helping to prevent water breakthrough.
The differential pressure across the membrane must also remain below the sample stream pressure.
